Location:

Century II is a rather large facility. The Wichita gun show is held in the “Bob Brown Expo Hall” portion of the venue. Because it’s so large, various building and even the parking lots have their own addresses according to the website for the facility. I’m going to use the “main address” of 225 West Douglas, Wichita Kansas 67202-3100 for the purpose of this page.

Basic Show Information

The restrooms at the Wichita Gun Show are actually fairly nice for a gun show, but they are all located by the food sales, so there can be a bit of a hike depending on where you started at.

Food sales are typical gun show, nothing really special. And of course, given that you are a captive audience, expensive. Plan accordingly.

Air conditioning is actually decent in this location, at least it was at previous shows.

There have been at least three promoters working gun shows in this location. Keep that in mind when looking, and if you had a good or bad experience, make sure you are blaming or crediting the right promoter, not the facility, for said show.  There have been two normal gun show promoters, and one “outdoors show” promoter that had a small gun show contingent back in one corner.  Of the two normal gun show promoters, only RK Shows is still working Century II.

Parking is interesting. Pretty much the entire area around the facility is coated in parking meters. Checking with the show promoters, the parking meters are not enforced on Saturdays and Sundays, so it’s effectively free parking.

Address: This location has the “vanity address” of 1 Expocentre Drive, Topeka Kansas 66612. If your GPS doesn’t understand that address, it’s on Topeka Boulevard, between 17th and 21st streets. Once you are in the area, it’s kind of hard to miss.

Basic Show Information:

This facility is decent for gun shows. It’s a decent sized fairly modern building. Bathroom facilities are in good repair, but all located along one side of the building, so there may be a walk involved.

Sad to say, show food at this facility is among the poorest I’ve seen at a show. And, as is typical for a gun show, seriously overpriced. I seriously cannot recommend you get food from this show.

Parking is free, at least it has been every time I looked. You will have a little bit of a walk from the outer edges to the front door if the show is getting crowded.

There have been multiple Topeka Gun Show promoters using this facility in the past.  At the current time, only RK Shows has been hosting shows here.

Air conditioning is decent in this facility.

Location:

Address: 11730 NW Ambassador Drive, Kansas City Missouri 64153

Basic Show Information:

The Kansas City Gun Show at the KCI Expo Center is held in a larger building with many separate rooms. It’s possible that more events than the Kansas City Gun Show can be held here at the same time. This can be an issue with parking when it happens.

Food is available through a separate room in the KCI Expo Center called the “Fly Away Cafe”. While high priced, it’s actually better than some I’ve seen. Although, to be honest, for the prices charged, you wouldn’t voluntarily pick it as an option. It has a small museum style display about various aviation topics in there.

Restrooms are well maintained, and unfortunately, located closer to the main entrance than the room where the gun shows are held. You are going to have a walk ahead of you. On the bright side, it’s easy to hit the bathroom before leaving.

Parking is interesting. Especially if more than one event takes place at the same time. The KCI Expo Center main parking lot is decent sized, but also shares space with the Holiday Inn that’s next to the facility. Because of this, Kansas City Gun Show parking often spills out into the adjoining streets, and empty grass lots across the street.

During RK Shows, shuttle busses are set up to help move you back and forth from parking to the front door.

I’m from Kansas, can I buy a gun at this show?

Kansas City is a “dual state” city, with some of it in Kansas and some of it in Missouri.  This can lead to interesting issues when legally buying a gun there.

The KCI Expo Center is on the Missouri side, very close to MCI Airport.  Missouri laws apply here.

I’m not a lawyer or a BATFE agent, but here’s what I know:

Long Guns from FFL Dealers: Kansas and Missouri are reciprocal on long gun purchases. Citizens from either state can buy long guns from FFL dealers from either state.

Long Guns from private sellers: Missouri citizens can buy from other Missouri Citizens.  Kansas private buyers or sellers may have to go through an FFL dealer to legally buy or sell in Missouri.

Handguns from FFL Dealers or Private sellers: Missouri citizens can buy at their convenience. Kansas citizens can buy from an FFL dealer but will have to have the gun transferred to a Kansas FFL to officially sell it to them.  The same caveat applies to any private sales of handguns.

There are usually a couple of dealers at this show that will perform this service for a fee, typically called a “transfer fee”.

Multiple Promoters working this facility

There are at least two active promoters doing Kansas City Gun Shows at this facility, and there have been others in the past. RK Shows is the one that’s doing regular gun shows, another one is doing C&R (Curio & Relic) collectors shows.

Address: 6000 College Boulevard, Overland Park Kansas 66211.

Basic Show Information:

I’ve been to the Overland Park Gun Show held in the Overland Park Convention Center facility a couple of times.  My personal knowledge is more sketchy than I prefer.  I will try to fill that in as soon as I can.

The Overland Park Gun Show is held on the upper floor of the facility. There are elevators, and a very nice escalator system to move you between the levels.

Bathrooms are nice for the gun show area. They are centralized towards the “front” of the room (where you come in at).

I don’t honestly recall any details about the show food, or even if it was available. Assume “hostage pricing” if it’s there, though, that’s always a good assumption.

It looked like there was plenty of parking available for the location.

Note that a couple of show promoters, with amazingly similar names, have set up gun shows in this location in the past. I’ve actually done shows with both in the past, but I only intend to do shows with RK Shows there in the future.

Can I bring my gun to the Gun Show?

Can I bring my gun to the Gun Show?

When talking to people at the gun show about what holster they are looking for, I usually ask them if they have brought their gun with them.  If it’s a lesser known or rarer gun, you may need to have it handy to get a good holster fit.  Many people are under the impression that they are not allowed to bring their guns into the gun show.  In the vast majority of cases, nothing could be farther from the truth!

We are all 2A here

There is no such thing as a gun show that’s ran by anti-gun types.  We are all 2A types to some degree or another, or we wouldn’t be there.  There is an etiquette to be followed when preparing to go to the gun show with your weapon.

Why do this?

There are many reasons why you might want to bring your gun to the gun show.  Perhaps you want to sell it, or perhaps you want to trade it for something more to your liking.  You might be looking for a gunsmith to do some work, or put on a new coating or bluing on  your gun.  Perhaps (as is usually in my case), you want to get a new holster for concealed carry.

The common element among all of those scenarios, is that people will be handling your gun at the gun show.  You may be passing it over to others, you may be handling it yourself.  The best way to handle this situation is to make sure that any gun that will be handled is unloaded.  To both verify this, and to make it easy to visually check that the gun is unloaded, guns are “tied off” with zip ties.

Tying off a Gun

There are many, many ways to “tie off” a gun, and most shows have their own ways that they want to see it done.  Because of this, there really is very little incentive for you to “tie off” your gun.  It’s easier to just let the show officials do it for you.

The general rule for this situation, is to make sure that your guns are empty before you walk into the gun show.  You hand them to the officers working the gun check table. The officers examine the weapons to insure that they are unloaded.  They then zip tie the guns to show their empty status.  Next they typically put a “mark” such as a special sticker or label on the gun.  This is to show that the gun came in the door with you.

It is possible to unload the gun while standing at the gun check table.  However, if you choose to do it this way, please heed the following sign:

Note that ignoring this sign is a bad idea

Please do not be this guy. Do not be the guy that points a gun at anyone, let alone the gun check officers.

I know, I know.  You are smarter than that.  However, there was someone, somewhere, that wasn’t.  And you may be handing your weapon to them at the show.  This is why we have the gun tie-off rules.

Once you are cleared

Once in the show, go ahead and do what you came to do.  Just leave the zip strip in place while you do it.  Sometimes, when fitting holsters, zip ties get in the way.  It’s typically permissible to remove zip ties temporarily when fitting, so long as they are replaced before you leave the vendor.  Make sure to ask the vendor if they have spare zip ties to retie your weapon after doing this.

Time to Go

Ready to leave?  No problem!  You don’t need to check in with the gun check table before leaving.  Show personnel may check your guns to see if they are properly marked.  Remember that label that they put on the gun when you came in?  This is an anti-theft measure, to ensure that people don’t just “pick up a gun” laying on a table and walk out the door, claiming it’s theirs.  So long as the gun is properly labeled, or you have the sales invoice where you bought it at the show, it’s on to the parking lot.

In most areas, you can remove the zip ties once you head for the door.  You can also load back up at this time if you want.  I would suggest that you wait until you get to your car in most cases, though.  There really isn’t any point in making passers by nervous from seeing people walking out loading guns.  You and I both know we aren’t looking to cause trouble.  But why tempt fate?
